MCHS Defeats Atkinson Rebels
After a loss to Johnson County the week before, the Montgomery County High School Eagles football team bounced back with a win last week over Atkinson County at home.
The game started with the teams exchanging possessions. On the Eagles second offense series of the game, they got a big play that moved them across midfield and all the way to the Rebels 24-yard line. And from there Jayden Harris broke a couple of tackles and went in for the first touchdown of the game with 4:38 left to go in the first quarter. There was a bad snap on the extra point, and it was no good, but MCHS was on top 6-0.
Atkinson had to punt the ball away on their next series, but then got a gift from the Eagles as they were forced to punt. On the punt there was a bad snap with the ball bouncing back and the Rebels recovered it at the Eagles’ 20-yard line late in the first quarter.
On the first play of the second quarter, the Rebels took it in for a touchdown with 11:52 on the clock. They added the extra point to take a 7-6 lead over the Eagles.
After the ensuing kickoff, the Eagles were struggling to get moving, but on third down, Harris connected with Jordan Patterson for a 78-yard touchdown pass. MCHS again failed on the extra point, but with just over 10 minutes to play in the first half, the Eagles were back on top, 12-7.
MCHS moved the ball on their next possession as the Eagles moved the ball deep into Atkinson territory. But an interception at the 2-yard line stopped the Eagles’ drive.
In the third quarter of the game, the Rebels scored with 9:09 on the clock to take the lead back from Montgomery. They missed the extra point but were on top 13-12 over the Eagles. Later in the third quarter, the Rebels pushed their lead to 21-12 as they scored a touchdown and converted on the twopoint conversion.
But that was the last time that Atkinson found the end zone in the game. MCHS scored two more times as they came back to take the win over the Rebels, 26-21.
Patterson led the way for MCHS with four receptions for 232 yards and three touchdowns in the 26-21 victory over Atkinson County.
MCHS is now 2-1 on the season with one more game to play before they start their Region schedule. This week they will be at Taylor County in Butler with kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
