On a rainy night when the footing was limited at best, the Vidalia High School Indians football team scored 30 points and cruised by the Herons of Brantley County, 30-0, Friday night in Nahunta. With the win, the Indians improved to 3-1 on the year while putting up their first shutout since the second week of last season, a 61-0 win over Beach.

The Indians’ defense made a huge stop on the first drive of the evening after the Herons penetrated Vidalia territory to the Indian 40. But on third down, Germannick Durham intercepted a Kaden Hendrix pass, giving the Indians the ball at their 22-yard line.

From there, the Indians mounted an 11-play drive capped by a Jackson Berry 4-yard run. Following an Adam Crutchfield PAT, the Indians led 7-0 with 43 seconds left in the first quarter.

The Indians’ second score of the night came on their second drive. They took the ball 57 yards on 13 plays, making it 14-0 with 4:28 to go in the half after Jamarion Phillips took it in from 2 yards out for the score.

Ten penalties in a span of 4:27 marred the rest of the quarter, dragging the end of the quarter out to almost 35 minutes. Despite the Herons getting to the Indians’ 25-yard line, the Vidalia defense made a fourth-down stop, ending the drive and the half.

The Indians received the opening kick of the second continued from page

half, and six plays later, Jamarion Phillips scored his second touchdown of the night on an 18-yard run. This gave the Indians a 22-0 lead with 9:38 to go in the third quarter, following a Phillips run for a 2-point conversion following a Brantley Penalty.

On the first play from scrimmage following the kick, the Herons fumbled the ball on their 47-yard line, with the Indians making a recovery. On the first play for the Indians, Jackson Berry hit DJ Wallace on a 47-yard touchdown strike to give Vidalia a 30-0 lead with 9:13 to go in the third quarter following another 2-point conversion run by Phillips.

Neither team scored any points during the remainder of the third quarter, and for the second week in a row, the fourth quarter was played with a running clock. The Indians’ offense amassed 268 yards, while their defense held Brantley County to 132 yards, with most of those yards coming after the game had been decided. Phillips ended the night with over 100 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

Up next, the Indians will travel to Eastman to face Dodge County at John M. Peacock Field on Friday night. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
