BPC Soccer Gets 1st Win

The Brewton-Parker College men's soccer team played two matches last week as they faced off with the Yellow Jackets of SCAD and the Pensacola Christian College Eagles. BPC fell in their matchup with SCAD but picked up a win over Pensacola. vs. SCAD
The Barons Men's Soccer team did everything they could against SCAD Savannah to try and get their first win. The Barons showed an incredibly strong defensive performance, forcing the Yellow Jackets to retreat and reenter throughout the first half. The Barons had a great showing despite all of the Yellow Jackets shot attempts and scoring opportunities.
SCAD had taken 45 shots by the end of the match and had 17 on goal. The Barons goalie Gerardo Galicia made 16 saves, only conceding one goal on a tricky free kick just inside the box deflected off the wall and in.
Coach Bob Neuman said, 'SCAD, under John, will always be a really good side. Really well organized and structured. We knew that coming in, so we wanted that game so close to the start of our conference campaign.
“It's always difficult to lose a game that was so closely contested, but that's how the game goes sometimes. We will have to focus on the things that we can control and trust that the rest will go our way at the weekend.'
The Barons showed great composure despite SCAD's relentless attack and taking 23 shots versus the Barons' 3. The Barons were forced into a defensive battle and saw their keeper make save after save.
SCAD had two corner kicks in the first half, both of which led to scoring opportunities that the Barons forced away. The Barons were strong on the ball and showed a good transition game when they could. The Barons went into the half with a 0-0 tie. In the second half, the Yellow Jackets turned up the pressure even more after a relatively clean first half with SCAD receiving the only yellow card of the first half; the second half saw more scoring opportunities and a chippier style of play.
SCAD had 22 shots in the second half and six corners, giving them even more chances. The scoreless tie was inevitably broken in the 63 minute when Mario Goic scored off a free kick that deflected the ball off the defender's wall.
After conceding this go-ahead goal, the Barons showed off their toughest and most aggressive attack of the night, working hard for the last 25 minutes, determined to create scoring chances to try and tie the game.
While the Barons ultimately could not do this, it shows much promise for what might be coming the rest of the season. The Barons hope to carry this defensive performance into the remainder of their games, and hopefully, they see more of this new invigorated attack.

The Barons Men's Soccer team clawed out their first season victory over the Pensacola Christian College Eagles in a dramatic 4-1 final. Despite falling behind one to nothing, the Barons held in and clawed their way back to victory. The Barons knew they just had to wait for opportunities to come. The Barons came out of halftime and showed their best response of the season and came back to score four unanswered goals to claim their first win of the season.
Coach Neuman stated, 'We spent a lot of time this week defining the characteristics of what it means to be a Baron. I think the guys did a really good job of embodying those characteristics. They showed belief, unity, and discipline. I'm happy with the work they put in to earn the results, as we're on the eve of the conference schedule. Now, we must shift our focus to Faulkner on Thursday.'
The Barons showed great composure despite Giovanni Pauliello's goal in the 19th minute. They managed to stay within themselves and not make unforced errors, not allowing the Eagles to increase their lead. The Barons saw a clean first half and even managed to take 10 shots, forcing their keeper to make seven saves. The Barons had five corner kicks, generating chances and forcing the Eagles back into their defensive third throughout the first half.
In the second half, the Barons were given the ultimate equalizing opportunity with a penalty shot in the 47th minute for Francisco Martins. Martins wasted no time scoring the equalizer, and the momentum swung from there.
The Barons took the energy and scored just over two minutes later with a brilliant goal by Derventz Altidor.
Lazar Milosavljevic from Chris Bowen added another goal at 56:23 to give the Barons some muchneeded insurance. When some teams would revert and focus solely on defense, the Barons still looked for opportunities to find the back of the net and found one more at 62:47 when Feyisope Osifeso notched his first of the season with a great assist from Milosavljevic.
The Barons and Eagles were tied in shots at 19. The Barons led in corners seven to five.
The Eagles led in saves 11 to five. The Barons led in fouls 11 to ten. The Eagles and Barons both finished with two yellow cards aside.
The Barons will look to carry this momentum into their next match at Faulkner University.
