A woman lost her life in an accident on State Route 29 in Treutlen County on Saturday morning, September 14, as she was hit head on by a semi-truck.
Tina Loretta Guzman, 58, of Glenwood, was driving northbound on State Route 29 at around 10:19 a.m. when she began to go around the car in front of her shortly after passing Milepost 5. To pass the vehicle, Guzman entered the road’s southbound lane, which was occupied by Macobia Anthony Phillips, 31, of Vidalia, who slammed on brakes upon seeing Guzman enter the lane but was unable to avoid the collision.
Phillips’ truck skidded for around 56 feet before hitting Guzman head on, and causing her vehicle to spin clockwise and begin traveling south for 120 feet down before coming to an uncontrolled stop in the east ditch. The semi continued to go straight for over 200 feet after the crash, before going into continued from page
the west ditch and coming to a final stop.
Guzman was pronounced dead at the scene while Phillips remained unharmed.
The driver of the vehicle which Guzman was attempting to pass told troopers that he saw the semi-truck in the southbound lane when he noticed a vehicle entering that same lane near the rear of his vehicle. The driver stated he then heard the loud crash of the collision.
The accident was also recorded on the semi’s dash camera, and investigated by the Georgia State Patrol, who determined that the collision was a result of Guzman’s distracted driving. A blood test was requested to determine if Guzman was impaired, but is currently awaiting results.
