Homecoming Win For Wheeler
The Wheeler County High School Bulldogs football team hosted the Bobcats of Dooly County last Friday night in Alamo for Homecoming. It was a good night for Wheeler as they pulled away in the second half of the game to take the Region win over Dooly. The Bulldogs are now 4-1 on the season and they are 1-0 in Region play.
With Homecoming the Bulldogs crowned their 2024 Homecoming Queen and Princess during halftime of the game. Anniyah Wright was named as Homecoming Queen and Justise DuBose in the Homecoming Princess.
As for the football game it was the running game of the Bulldogs that was the difference on the night. The offensive line wore down the Bobcats and paved the way for the running game to rack up 495 yards on the ground and five touchdown. This was the second game in a row that Wheeler rushed for over 400 yards with the big boys up front working hard. They were led by Justin Culver with 201 yards rushing with Alvin Ricks added 195 yards on the ground.
In the first half of the game the Bulldogs short themselves in the foot on multiple occasions as penalties stalled drives.
Wheeler got on the board first with a touchdown and a two-point conversion in the first quarter of the game to take an 8-0 lead. They added a passing touchdown early in the second quarter as they went on top 14-0 over the Bobcats.

ter a 35-yard rushing touchdown by Culver was called back on a penalty, and then two more penalties forced them to turn the ball over on downs at the Dooly 15 yard line with just over two minutes to play in the half.
The defense held and forced a punt with the offense taking back over at the Dooly 28-yard line with 1:16 left in the half. Wheeler threw an interception at the 1-yard line with 50 seconds on the clock, but that led to a safety on the first play from the Bobcats with Culver making the tackle in the end zone. That made the score 16-0 heading into halftime.
In the third quarter the Bulldogs began to pull away as they scored two more rushing touchdowns. That gave the Bulldogs a 32-0 lead over Dooly.
With 10 minutes left in the game the Bobcats got on the board with a passing touchdown and added the two-point conversion to make the score 32-8.
Wheeler answered with another rushing touchdown with five minutes left in the game to make the score 38-8.
With three minutes to play Dooly added a touchdown to close the lead to 38-16, but Wheeler scored one more time with just one minute to go to make the final score 45-16.
This week the Bulldogs will be at Hawkinsville with kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
