Wheeler Softball Playing Strong

The Wheeler County High School Lady Bulldogs softball team is now 13-4 on the year, and they are 6-1 in Region play as they won a Region game over Montgomery County on Tuesday of last week, then lost a nonregion game to Metter on Wednesday in a close battle.

Vs. Montgomery

Wheeler hosted the Lady Eagles of Montgomery last Tuesday and ran away with a run rule win. In the bottom of the first inning, Wheeler took the lead with a 2-RBI double from Gabby Angel and then a sacrifice fly from Anna Beth Ethredge made it 3-0.

In the second inning, Wheeler added five more runs to push their lead to 8-0. Kaleigh Scott doubled in a run, Shiann Carey picked up an RBI single, Ava Dixon added an RBI double as did Mackenzie Johnson. Wheeler scored one more run on an error as they lead over MCHS, 8-0.

Montgomery did plate a run in the top of the third inning, but Wheeler closed out the game with eight more runs in the bottom of the frame to take the win, 16-1. Scott had a two-run home run in the inning, along with a bases loaded double by Angel that scored three runs. Kyleigh Horne drove in two runs and then Scott came back to the plate and ended the game with an RBI double.

Paisley McCranie picked up the win in the circle for the Lady Bulldogs.

Vs. Metter

Wheeler dropped a one-run game to the Lady Tigers of Metter on Wednesday on the road. Wheeler held the early lead, 1-0, after an RBI double by Johnson in the top of the first inning.

Metter tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning, and then they took the lead with a run in the fifth inning to make it 2-1.

In the top of the seventh inning, Johnson came through with another RBI double as she tied the game at 2-2, but in the bottom of the seventh inning, Metter came through with a run to take the win over Wheeler, 3-2.

This week Wheeler played Hawkinsville in a Region game on Tuesday after presstime. They will be back in action on Thursday at Telfair County at 5:30 p.m.
