The Vidalia High School Indians softball team swept Berrien County on Friday of last week in the first round of the GHSA State Playoffs to advance to the Sweet 16.

Game 1

Berrien got on the board in the first inning after an error scored one run, however Vidalia jumped back into the lead in the bottom of the first inning after Deidra Boston grounded out, and Laylah Brantley singled to center field, each scoring one run.

A single by Gabby Royal extended the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the second inning.

Vidalia added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on five hits. Royal singled, scoring one run, Tori Polke homered to left field, scoring two runs, and Deidra Boston hit a solo home run to right field. That put the Indians on top 8- 1.

Polke earned the win for the Indians. The hurler gave up two hits and one run continued from page

(zero earned) over seven innings, striking out four and walking four. Laylah Brantley, Royal, Miya Howard, and Polke each collected two hits for Vidalia. Royal, Polke, and Boston each drove in two runs for the Indians.

Game 2

The Indians were the first to get on the board when Brantley grounded out, scoring one run in the top of the first inning. Vidalia added to their early lead in the top of the second inning after Polke singled to right field, and Deidra Boston doubled to left field, each scoring two runs.

VHS plated two more runs in the top of the sixth inning on the way to a 7-3 victory over Berrien.

Polke earned the win for Vidalia. She gave up six hits and three runs (one earned) over seven innings, striking out nine and walking three. Polke and Boston were a force together in the lineup, as they each collected three hits for the Indians.

The Indians will travel to Homer on Thursday of this week to take on Banks County in the Sweet 16. They will play a doubleheader on Thursday with the first game beginning at 3:00 p.m. If necessary, they will play a third game on Friday at 1:00 p.m.
