RTCA Loses Heartbreaker
Robert Toombs Christian Academy's Crusader football team was in Americus last Friday night to take on the Raiders of Southland Academy. It was a low scoring game with Southland coming out on top in heartbreaking fashion in the final minute of the game.
RTCA took the early lead in the game as they took the ball on their first possession and went in for a touchdown. They added the extra point to take a 7-0 lead with eight minutes to play in the first quarter.
RTCA's defense held over the remainder of the first quarter. But in the second quarter, the Raiders tied the game at 7-7 with just over three minutes to play in the first half.
RTCA came right back and got a big touchdown and the PAT to go back on top, 14-7. RTCA held on and was on top by that score at halftime.
The defenses were key in the third quarter as neither team found the end zone.
Late in the fourth quarter, the Raiders were driving the ball, but RTCA stood strong at their own 5-yard line and held them out of the end zone with just one minute left in the game. RTCA took the ball over on downs, and just needed to pick up a few yards to run out the clock.
But disaster happened as the Raiders got a safety on the Crusaders, closing the lead to 14-9. RTCA then had to kick the ball off to Southland, and on the kickoff the Raiders returned it 60-yards for a touchdown to take the lead over RTCA, 15-14 with less than one minute left in the game and get the win.
RTCA is now 2-5 on the year, and they are 0-2 in Region play. This week they will host Trinity Christian with kickoff at 7:30 p.m.
