Wheeler County Middle School is working to reinforce a culture of literacy in all classrooms. Each grade level developed strategies that would support the schoolwide effort. In September, which is nationally celebrated as “Library Card Signup Month,” many 6th grade students and staff applied for and received the Pines card from Wheeler County Public Library. For October, 6th grade teachers recognized “National Cookbook Month” with in-class activities. Students read from cookbooks by Brenda Gantt in Mrs. Stanley-Bateson’s language arts class. The cookbook not only provides easy-to-make recipes but provides readers with personal heartwarming stories. In Mrs. Carey’s math class, students worked on problems related to recipes that involved them needing to half, triple, or four-third a recipe. Pictured is Makinezi Fowler working on her recipe.
