Soperton Passes Building Permit Ordinance and Ethics Policy
The City Council of Soperton held its regular meeting on Monday, October 21, 2024, to discuss new ordinances, ongoing projects, and other city matters included adopting a Building Permit Ordinance. Among other issues was the reporting of continued progress on Hurricane Helene cleanup.
The first order of business was unanimous approval of the Ethics Ordinance, continued from page
aimed at giving citizens a formal avenue to voice concerns and be heard at the local level. With the ordinance now placed in the municipal code book, Mayor John Koon said the City of Soperton will now move forward with the state requirements. Completion is expected by January 2025, at which time the City of Soperton will be officially recognized as a “City of Ethics.”
The council also unanimously approved the Policy and Procedures for Building Permit Ordinance. This ordinance sets regulations for building permits, establishes fees, penalties, enforces compliance with state minimum requirements, and penalties for violations.
In other business, the council considered an application for a business license at the former Circle K location from Shy Marathon. The license was not approved, as only one council member made a motion, which did not meet requirements for approval. This marks the third application for a business license at this location. The first application was denied due to the applicant failing a background check. The second application, made by the same LLC with a different applicant, was approved but later withdrawn. The most recent application came from a new set of individuals.
