Shoppers and staff were evacuated from Walmart on Saturday, November 2, after a bomb threat was made to the location.
Vidalia police officers and Toombs County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Walmart at 1:43 p.m. on Saturday, after the store received a bomb threat from an unidentified source. Everyone within the store was evacuated from the building.
“When we went in the store, I noticed two of the aisles were blocked off near the Oreos, and a lot of officers and people were looking towards the top of the shelf. When I got near the front of the store, I noticed even more officers and law enforcement, so I was just trying to get out fast,” one customer explained. “While I was checking out at the self checkout area, a huge group of around 100 people started running out the store but no one said why. It was crazy!”
Police officers, deputies, and a few Walmart staff members searched the facility. After finding an item of concern within one of the aisles, law enforcement officers requested assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Bomb Disposal Unit. One of the unit’s certified bomb technicians searched the area and investigated the item, before ultimately deeming the item and the store safe.
Anyone with information regarding this incident should call the Vidalia Police Department at (912) 537-4123.
