Wheeler County Middle School Students are combining learning and exercise with The Walking Classroom.
Eighth grade students in Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Veal’s STEM class listened to a 15-minute science podcast and walked in the cafeteria while the rain pounded outside. Each podcast focuses on building students’ listening comprehension skills and includes a science, social studies, or ELA lesson, as well as a healthy literacy message (ex: Balanced Diet, Respect, Bullying, Caring for Injuries…) and a character value (Bravery, Determination, Generosity, Self- Respect…). The Walking Classroom gives students an opportunity to move their bodies while continuing to learn. Due to the implementation of new English Language Arts (ELA) content standards in the 2025-2026 school year, the 8th grade staff and students, with the support of the Georgia Department of Education, recently participated in a pilot test which included listening comprehension for the Georgia Milestones ELA Assessment.
