The Lyons City Council officially set the municipality’s millage rate during their regular monthly meeting on November 5.

Prior to the meeting, the Council held three public forums to hear concerns from citizens regarding the proposed millage rate, which remained the same rate as last year. After hearing no objections within these forums, Council members approved to set the rate at 3.89 mills.

During the meeting, Council members also authorized the emergency repair of North Victory Drive, which was first damaged during Hurricane Debby in August and further destroyed during Hurricane Helene in September. The Council agreed that the road needed to be repaired as quickly as possible because of its being a popular route, and agreed to contract McLendon Enterprises to complete the work. The project will be funded through the city’s Special Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) and has been added to the 2024 Capital Budget.

The Council authorized a moratorium to be placed on permits for manufactured homes, mobile homes, rv parks, mobile home parks, and related items, as the city’s Planning and Zoning Board is working to create new ordinances regulating these structures and facilities.

Members of the Toombs County Retired Educators Association were presented with a formal proclamation by Mayor Willis NeSmith Jr. This proclamation declared November 3 as being Retired Educators Day in cooperation with Georgia Governor Brian Kemp’s declaration of the holiday. NeSmith thanked the women for their work in the community and service to local youth.

The next Council work session will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, November 26, and the next Council meeting is slated for 6 p.m. on Tuesday, December 3.
