On Friday, November 8, the Toombs County High School Bulldogs cross country teams traveled to Carrollton, GA, to compete in the GHSA State Championships.
Boys
In the boys’ race, sophomore Juan Luna led the team with an impressive time of 17:41.22, placing 4th individually out of 171 runners and earning a spot on the podium. He was followed by freshman Luis Valentin, senior Kevin Mentado, freshman Cole Russell, and sophomore Victor Valentin. The boys’ strong efforts resulted in an 8th place team finish out of 24 competing teams.
Girls
In the girls’ race, senior Bryleigh Woods paced the Lady Bulldogs with a time of 26:05, securing 58th place out of 154 runners. Woods was followed by juniors Camila Hernandez and Mareli Luna, sophomore Deanna Gonzalez, and senior Josseline Zamorano, with the girls’ team finishing 16th out of 24 teams.
TCHS Head Coach Jeremy Moore said, “I am pleased with how both teams performed at the state meet,” the coach shared. “Each year, we know how challenging this course will be, and while we try to prepare by training on hills back home, it’s tough to fully simulate this level of difficulty in South Georgia. We set team placement goals before arriving, and both teams finished right where we thought they could if we ran well. Cross country demands immense mental toughness, and both groups have worked hard to reach this point. I couldn’t be prouder of their accomplishments this season!”
