Wheeler Falls In 1st Round
The Wheeler County High School Bulldogs football team's season came to an end last Friday night as they traveled to Jenkins County to take on the War Eagles in the first round of the GHSA State Playoffs. Jenkins pulled away from Wheeler on the way to the win.
Jenkins kicked off the scoring with a defensive touchdown. Just three minutes into the game the Eagles scooped up a fumble and returned it for the touchdown. They tacked on the extra point to take a 7-0 lead.
Wheeler came back with a 20-yard rushing touchdown by Alvin Ricks with five minutes left in the first quarter. They were not successful on the two-point conversion as Jenkins held onto a 7-6 lead.
With just over one minute to play in the first quarter, Jenkins extended their lead to 13-6 with a rushing touchdown. They missed the extra point.
Late in the second quarter, the Eagles added another score, this time on an 8-yard run, to push the lead to 19-6. They made the PAT to go up 20- 6.
Early in the third quarter, Jenkins scored on a 30-yard run, but missed the extra point. They led at that point 26-6. Just a minute later Jenkins scooped up another fumble and returned it for a touchdown. That pushed the
lead to 33-6. Jenkins added one more touchdown in the third quarter as they went ahead, 39-6.
The Bulldogs did put one more touchdown on the board with about eight minutes to play in the game. Jahkoryan Dinkins scored on a 15yard run. Wheeler added the two-point conversion on a pass to Derien Wilson. That made the score 39-14.
Wheeler was not able to find the end zone again as they fell to the War Eagles, 39-14. That ended the Bulldogs season with a record of 7-4. Ricks finished his season as the #4 ranked rusher in the state of Georgia across all classifications with 1,806 yards.
