On Friday night, the Toombs County High School Bulldogs continued their historic season with a dominant performance against the #7-ranked Commerce Tigers in Round 2 of the GHSA State Playoffs. Utilizing a potent running game and an aggressive air attack, the Bulldogs punched their ticket to the Quarterfinals for the second straight year.
Commerce won the opening coin toss and elected to receive, but the Red Bullet Defense quickly set the tone, forcing a three-and-out. Taking over at their own 48-yard line, the Bulldogs wasted no time. On just their second play from scrimmage, senior running back Dabyn Wadley broke loose for a 24-yard touchdown run. Kicker Alex Otero added the extra point, giving Toombs an early 7-0 lead with 9:21 remaining in the first quarter.
After another defensive stand forced a Commerce punt, the Bulldogs struck again. Starting at their own 23-yard line, senior quarterback TJ Stanley orchestrated a six-play drive, culminating in a 33-yard touchdown pass to senior wide receiver LaGonza Hayward. The score extended the Toombs lead to 14-0 with five minutes left in the quarter.
Commerce responded with their best drive of the night, a 15-play, 72-yard march that ended with a touchdown to cut the Bulldog lead to 14-7. However, that was as close as the Tigers would get. Stanley took over, connecting with Justice Wilds and Gavin Fletcher on touchdown passes to push the Bulldogs’ advantage to 28-7 at halftime.
The second half was all Toombs County. The Bulldogs added three more touchdowns, with Justin Powell, Dabyn Wadley, and Donterrius Mincey finding the end zone. The offensive explosion not only sealed the 49-7 victory but also set a new single-season scoring record for the Bulldogs, surpassing the mark established just last year.
With the win, Toombs County (101) advances to the Quarterfinals and will host Elbert County (7-5) this Friday night in The Pit. The Bulldogs continue their quest for a state title with momentum and record-breaking performances on their side.
