The Montgomery County Board of Commissioners handled several pieces of regular business during their meeting on Tuesday, November 12.

Commissioners approved the adoption of the insurance premium tax resolution, which will divide the earnings from the insurance premium tax collected throughout the year, totaling $434,176.01, between the rural fire and solid waste departments. The rural fire departments will receive $132,200, and solid waste collection will receive $301,976.01. “This is a yearly thing,” County Manager Heather Scott remarked.

During the meeting, the commissioners approved the reappointment of James Welch and Barbara Clark to the Board of Elections. They will now serve a four-year term, ending in 2028.

Citizen DeeAnn Shiplett provided the county commissioners with a letter detailing the condition of her dirt road, as she informed the leadership that she had become frustrated in her attempts to have her concerns met. “I’ve talked with 3 different people since September 9, and none of them have gotten back with me,” she told the commissioners. “I have a son who is paralyzed at home. If that pipe washes out, I cannot get him out of there. I appreciate every one of you and what you do, but I felt like I was being given the run around.”

Newly elected tax commissioner Renia Wooten- Perry also addressed the commission, as she thanked the citizens of Montgomery County for their votes and shared her enthusiasm for working with the commissioners in her new role. “I wish to address this board by acknowledging that many of you have established a very long relationship and friendship with tax commissioner [Loretta] Lane, and that is to be commended – however, as the newly elected tax commissioner, I respectfully ask for your cooperation, collaboration, and communication to make this transition as effective and successful as possible,” she emphasized. “Thank you for your support, and I appreciate your assistance in this matter. I look forward to working closely with each and every one of you.”

The next work session of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners will be at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 5, and the Commission’s last meeting of the year will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, December 9. All meetings will be held at the Montgomery County Government Annex, located at 251 S. Richardson Street in Mount Vernon.
