On Tuesday of last week, the Vidalia High School Indians basketball teams finished up the STC Tip Off Tournament with the girls taking on Screven County and the boys facing off with Veterans. Then on Saturday, VHS hosted Bleckely County for a pair of games. The girls split their matches, but the boys picked up two wins.
Girls vs. Screven
This was a close game throughout until the fourth quarter where the Lady Indians pulled away. At the end of the first quarter, the Lady Gamecocks of Screven were on top 11-10, but in the second, the Indians went ahead and were in the lead, 20-18, at halftime.
Screven closed the lead to 32-31 by the end of the third quarter, but in the fourth, VHS went on a run as they outscored Screven, 196. That gave VHS a 51-37 win over the Gamecocks.
Boys vs. Veterans
Vidalia secured a solid 50-41 win over Veterans, with a strong performance on both sides of the ball.
Vidalia jumped out to an impressive lead, holding a 2815 advantage at halftime. The Indians’ defense was stifling in the first half, limiting Veterans to just 15 points. Their defensive pressure, spearheaded by Alton Boles and a collective effort from the team, kept Veterans from finding any offensive rhythm.
Jayon Coleman was the standout player of the night, leading the charge with a game-high 22 points and grabbing 7 rebounds. His ability to score in a variety of ways, both inside and from mid-range, was a key factor in Vidalia’s victory. Rashad Brown also had a strong showing, contributing 9 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists. His ability to impact the game in multiple areas helped the Indians maintain control throughout the contest, and his playmaking kept the offense flowing smoothly.
The Vidalia defense, led by Alton Boles, applied pressure throughout the game, forcing turnovers and limiting Veterans’ scoring opportunities. Boles was particularly effective at guarding the perimeter and helping to disrupt the opposing offense, making it difficult for Veterans to get into any consistent flow Girls vs. Bleckley
The Lady Indians got off to a slow start as they were outscored 13-6 in the first quarter of the game. They found some rhythm in the second, but VHS was down, 27-20 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Lady Royals of Bleckley extended their lead to 40-27. Bleckley went on to win the game, 49-37, over VHS.
Boys vs. Bleckley
Vidalia High School improved to 3-0 on the season with a hard-fought 46-36 victory over Bleckley County. The Indians were led by Coleman, who scored 20 points to propel his team to the win. Freshman Brycen Burns also made key contributions, hitting a couple of crucial three-pointers that helped Vidalia build momentum.
Coleman was the standout player of the game, putting up a team-high 20 points. His offensive efficiency and leadership helped Vidalia maintain control throughout the contest.
Burns stepped up in a big way, knocking down a pair of key three-pointers. His ability to hit from deep added an extra dimension to the Indians’ offense.
Both Atkins and Brown were crucial in the scoring department, providing valuable points to support Coleman’s big night. Their contributions kept Bleckley County’s defense on its heels.
Joshtin Troupe and Cincer Jones led a strong defensive effort that stifled Bleckley County’s attack. Troupe and Jones, along with a host of other defenders, played a pivotal role in limiting the Royals’ scoring opportunities and securing the win. This week the Indians were back at home on Tuesday as they hosted Ware County after presstime. They were scheduled to play Toombs County on Friday, but that game has been postponed due to the Bulldogs' football team making the Final 4 of the State Playoffs.
