Toombs County Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) students recently returned from an incredible trip to San Antonio, Texas, where they attended the Youth Transportation Safety Summit. As one of only two schools in the entire state of Georgia to participate, the group proudly represented their community while learning innovative strategies to promote safe driving practices.
The summit, organized by Teens in the Driver's Seat (TDS), focused on empowering students to lead their peers in advocating for road safety. TDS is a peer-led program designed to address the leading cause of death for teens in the United States—car crashes. Through activities, education, and outreach, students work to raise awareness and create safer roads in their communities.
Toombs County FCCLA’s involvement in TDS is already making a difference. For the 2023-2024 school year, the chapter earned the prestigious 7-Star All-Star School title, an honor given to schools that excel in leading impactful safe driving activities.
The summit began with an inspiring opening session featuring the Bexar County Sheriff and a lively performance by a local Mariachi band. Throughout the event, students attended impactful workshops, including sessions like How to Harness the Power of Storytelling and How to Ignite Your Impact on Peer Leadership. These workshops equipped them with tools to effectively advocate for road safety and lead meaningful initiatives.
A highlight of the trip was the All-Star Olympics, an interactive competition where participants raced to complete activities centered on safe driving. The Toombs County FCCLA team demonstrated exceptional teamwork and knowledge, earning the 1st place title! Students had the chance to time to explore San Antonio’s rich history and culture, including a tour of the historic Alamo. They also enjoyed a scenic Riverboat tour, shopping downtown, and a stop at Buc-ee's for a quintessential Texas experience. Students indulged in local Mexican cuisine, making the trip as delicious as it was memorable.
Advisor Mallorie Corley expressed her pride in the students, as she remarked, “This summit was a fantastic opportunity for our students to learn, grow, and represent Georgia and our small town on a national stage. They’ve come back with creative ideas and the confidence to inspire change in our community.”
