Busy Week For RTCA

The Robert Toombs Christian Academy Crusaders basketball teams got off to solid starts this season. The Lady Crusaders, who are coming off a State Championship last season, are out to a 5-0 start, while the boys who made it to the Final 4 are out to a 3-0 start.

The Crusaders of RTCA kicked off the week at Edmund Burke Academy and got a little revenge for the loss in the football State Championship. Up next, they hosted Thomas Jefferson on Thursday and then Twiggs Academy on Friday.

Girls vs. EBA This was the closest game of the week for either team as it took overtime for RTCA to pull out the win. This was a backand- forth game throughout. EBA held the early lead and were on top, 1210, at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, RTCA came back and took the lead over EBA. The Lady Crusaders were up by just one, 2322, heading into halftime.

In the third quarter, the Lady Spartans went back in front as they outscored RTCA 14-11 in the quarter. That put them up 36-34 heading into the fourth. But RTCA found a way as they came back to tie the game at, 49-49, to force overtime.

In the overtime period, RTCA pulled away and took the win over EBA, 57-51.

Boys vs. EBA

In the boys’ game, it was also close, but RTCA came away with the win over the Spartans. RTCA won the game, 60-53, for the boys’ first win in their first game of the season.

Girls vs. TJ

In the girls’ game against the Lady Jaguars of Thomas Jefferson, RTCA rolled to a win, led by a double-double by Meredith Durd en. RTCA was o n top 15-10 at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Lady Crusaders went on a run as they pulled away from TJ. That gave them a 2815 lead heading into halftime.

RTCA out scored the Jaguars 13-4 in the third quarter to extend their lead to 41-19. RTCA went on to win the game, 4925.

Durden led the way with 19 points and 11 rebounds for RTCA. Amelia Mercer added 14 points with Kailen Brantley scoring 13 in the win.

Boys vs. TJ

The Crusaders ran away with the win over the Jaguars in the boys’ game. RTCA rolled to a 63-27 victory.

Girls vs. Twiggs

RTCA rolled to a win over the Lady Trojans of Twiggs Academy on Friday night at home. Mercer was the key to the win in this game as she scored 28 points along with six assists and seven steals.

RTCA jumped out to a 19-5 lead in the first quarter and extended that to 42-10 by halftime. In the second half, there was a running clock as RTCA continued to pull away. RTCA went on to win the game, 66-27.

Boys vs. Twiggs

It was a similar game as RTCA dominated the Trojans in the boys’ game as well. RTCA took the win over Twiggs, 69-22.

This week RTCA will be on the road as they travel to Pinewood Christian on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. and then to Frederica Academy on Friday at 6:30 p.m.
