Tough Week On Hardcourt For Bulldogs

The Toombs County High School basketball teams kicked off January with wins over Montgomery County but faced a challenging weekend with back-to-back losses against Vidalia and Jeff Davis.

Girls vs. MCHS

It was a low scoring game between the Lady Bulldogs and the Lady Eagles, but a big night from Arianna Hill gave Toombs the win. TCHS jumped out to a 15-3 lead in the first quarter of the game. In the second quarter, the Lady Eagles made a run as they closed the lead to 19- 12.

In the second half, the Bulldogs did just enough to maintain their lead on the way to the win. They were on top 28-19 at the end of the third and went on to win the game, 36-23.

Hill led the way with 17 points, and Brinley Miller added 9 in the win.

Boys vs. MCHS

The TCHS boys opened the month on a high note, showcasing their offensive and defensive prowess in a dominant win over Montgomery County.

Toombs was up 14-7 at the end of the first, but in the second, the Eagles held their own. By the end of the first half, the score was 27-24 with the Bulldogs out in front.

Toombs added to their lead in the third quarter of the game to take a 46-38 lead into the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs pulled away in the fourth on the way to a 63-47 win.

Mike Polke led the way with 19 points, 10 steals, 6 rebounds, and 7 assists. Gavin Fletcher posted 19 points, 3 rebounds, 4 steals, and a block. Parker Stanley added a double-double with 14 points, 12 rebounds, 1 assist, and 2 steals. And Cornelius “Junior” Bullard contributed 8 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 blocks. The win pushed the team to a 6-2 overall record and 1-0 in Region play.

Girls vs. VHS

The Lady Bulldogs fell to the Lady Indians on Friday of last week. VHS jumped out to a 12-9 lead in the first, and pushed that to a 28-17 by the end of the first half.

TCHS kept fighting in the second half, but VHS was still in front, 34-25 at the end of the third. Vidalia went on to win the game, 48-34.

Toombs was led by Miller with 9 points, and Hill and Makayla Brewton each posted 8 points in the loss.

Boys vs. VHS

This was a low scoring boys game between the Bulldogs and the Indians. Toombs was on top 8-5 at the end of the first quarter. In the second, both teams were a little better on offense, but at the end of the first half, the Toombs was in front, 20-19.

They kept pace in the third quarter with the Bulldogs hanging onto a 31-30 lead heading to the fourth. But in the fourth quarter, the Indians outscored Toombs, 11-5, to take the win, 41-36.

TCHS was led by Polke with 12 points and Stanley added 9 in the loss.

Girls vs. JD

It was a tough matchup on Satuday for the Bulldogs as they took on Jeff Davis on the road. Toombs fell to the Lady Yellow Jackets 42-33.

TCHS was led by Hill with 14 points.

Boys vs. JD

In another close battle, the Dawgs fell to Jeff Davis 55-51 after being outscored in the second and third quarters.

Toombs held a small 9-7 lead at the end of the first quarter, but in the second, Jeff Davis went on top, and led 25-23 at the end of the first half.

In the third quarter, JD pushed their lead to 38-34, and they went on to take the win, 55-51.

TCHS had four players in double figures with Stanley leading the way with 13 points. Fletcher scored 12 points in the loss, followed by Polke with 11, and Bullard with 10.

The Lady Bulldogs are now 2-5 on the season and they are 1-1 in Region play, while the boys are 6-4 overall and also 1-1 in the Region.

This week TCHS faced off with Swainsboro after presstime on Tuesday. The girls will be back in action on Friday at home at 6:00 p.m against St. Vincent's, and then both teams will play at Tattnall County on Saturday starting at 5:00 p. m.
