The Toombs County Soccer Association (TCSA) hosted another successful 5v5 soccer tournament on January 11, drawing teams from across the state. Sixteen teams competed in 32 matches throughout the day, representing communities including Athens, Jackson, Douglas, Hazlehurst, Baxley, and Vidalia, which fielded six teams. Despite cold and windy conditions, players showcased fierce competition across all age groups and genders. The action was intense, as seen in the photo below where TCSA's Claudia Meredith battles Hot Shot's Anna Beall for possession, with teammates Kathryn Gonzalez and Maribeth Stephens supporting.
The tournament aligned with the mission of 5v5 Soccer: to grow the game from the grassroots level by providing opportunities for players to compete in accessible tournaments nationwide. This format allows friends, organized teams, and all-star groups to come together and enjoy the sport. The 5v5 philosophy emphasizes adding value to the local soccer community, operating with excellence, and partnering with quality people and facilities to create top-notch events.
TCSA, a nonprofit organization dedicated to youth development since 2004, provided the perfect backdrop for this event. With experienced coaches boasting over 120 years of combined experience, TCSA focuses on fostering a love for the game while building teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship. Tournament Highlights:
Girls High School Division: TCSA emerged victorious with a narrow 2-0 win over the Hot Shots. TCSA’s middle school girls also made a strong showing, finishing third while competing in the high school division.
High School Boys Division: After a day of hardfought matches, Pinnacle FC from Baxley narrowly defeated Douglas Soccer Club 4-3 in the final.
Middle School Boys Division: Hazlehurst Rayados Soccer Academy dominated the division, going undefeated. Pinnacle FC from Baxley finished a close second, with only one loss. 13u Boys Division: Hazlehurst Rayados Soccer Academy secured the top spot after overcoming an earlier 6-1 defeat to Athens United, ultimately defeating them 3-1 in the final.
TCSA congratulated all participating teams for their dedication and effort. The organization emphasized the inclusive nature of these 5v5 events, welcoming players of all skill levels, from ages 6 and up, in both male and female divisions. Teams do not need to be affiliated with a club or school to participate, making it a great opportunity for neighborhood friends to play together.
The top three teams in each division earned a bid to Nationals in Tampa, Florida. TCSA will host another 5v5 tournament in July.
