Vidalia Terminates Police Chief

The city of Vidalia announced the termination of Police Chief James Jermon on Monday, January 13.

According to Vidalia City Manager Josh Beck, the decision to fire the chief came as a part of the “city’s commitment to ensuring that the Vidalia Police Department performs its public safety functions with the highest standards of leadership, professionalism, and community trust.”

“While decisions like this are never easy, the Mayor, City Council, and I are committed to ensuring that our Police Department operates with the highest level of excellence,” Beck remarked. “Public safety remains our top priority, and we will continue to dedicate significant resources to enhancing the department’s effectiveness continued from page

and ensuring the safety of our community.”

Mayor Doug Roper also commented on the action. “Decisions such as these are never easy nor made without much consideration. While the city ultimately decided to move in a different direction, we wish James nothing but the best and will always remain grateful for his service to the City of Vidalia,” he said. “I, along with the Council and City Manager Josh Beck, desire the community to support Interim Chief Garry Colson, his support staff and officers, as he assumes this new role. We will provide him with the tools and resources needed to bridge this gap for us to complete a thorough search for the next full-time Chief of Police for the Vidalia Police Department.”

The City has already begun seeking a new Police Chief, but until the vacant role is filled, Captain Garry Colson will serve as the Interim Police Chief. Further details regarding the search will be announced in coming weeks.
