Local STAR Students & Teachers to Be Recognized January 28

The Kiwanis Club of Vidalia will honor the local Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) awardees during a ceremony at Vidalia High School on Tuesday, January 28.

The Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) STAR program is sponsored, administered, and promoted by PAGE and the PAGE Foundation. Since beginning in 1958, the STAR program has honored nearly 29,500 students and the teachers selected as the most influential to each student’s academic achievement. To win the award, high school seniors must have the highest score on a single test date on the SAT and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade point average to qualify for STAR nomination. The award program begins each year in participating Georgia high schools when the STAR Student is named and chooses a STAR Teacher to share in this recognition. The students and their teachers are honored by their schools and receive special recognition in their communities from one of the more than 172 statewide civic organizations and businesses that serve as local sponsors of the STAR program. Students then compete for school system recognition as the top STAR Student, and those winners compete for region honors. Region winners contend for the honor of being named State PAGE STAR Student. STAR Teachers continue on with their STAR Students at every level of the program.

The ceremony on January 28 will honor STAR Students and Teachers from Montgomery County High School, Robert Toombs Christian Academy, Toombs County High School, Vidalia High School, and Vidalia Heritage Academy. A district STAR Student winner will be announced, and that student will then move on for further competition levels.

Program contributors for this event include Altamaha Bank & Trust Company, Peoples Bank, Georgia First Bank, Mount Vernon Bank, and Vidalia Federal Savings Bank. The program is sponsored locally by the Kiwanis Club of Vidalia.

Refreshments will be served prior to the ceremony at 5:30 p.m., and the awards will begin at 6:00 p.m. For more information, contact Region 8 STAR Administrator Rebekah Arnold at (912) 293-1218.
