Toombs Continues To Battle
The Toombs County High School Bulldogs basketball teams faced off with Woodville-Tompkins and Swainsboro last week. They were at Woodville on Tuesday and then turned around and hosted the Wolverines on Wednesday. They wrapped up the week against the Tigers of Swainsboro on Friday.
Girls vs. Woodville
On Tuesday, The Lady Bulldogs fell to the Lady Wolverines. It was a good game, but Woodville had just a bit too much as they took the win, 57-49.
Taylor Bland led the way for TCHS with 13 points, and Brinley Miller added 9 in the loss.
Boys vs. Woodville
The Toombs County Bulldogs hit the road Tuesday to take on Woodville-Tompkins, opening the first of back-toback games with a dominant 66-48 victory. The Bulldogs came out firing, jumping to a 25-8 first-quarter lead and extending their advantage to 22 points by halftime, 38-16.
In the second half, Woodville did make up a bit of ground, but they did not have enough. Toombs was up 54-34. Toombs went on to win the game, 66-48. Toombs' offensive execution was on full display, racking up 25 assists as they cruised to the win.
Gavin Fletcher led the way with 19 points, Parker Stanley added 14 points, Mike Polke posted 11 points, and Cornelius Bullard scored 10 points in the win.
Girls vs. Woodville
On Wednesday, the Lady Bulldogs turned things around. The Lady Bulldogs delivered a dominant performance, led by Arianna Hill, who put up a monster double-double with 18 points and 22 rebounds. Makenna Gardisser made an impact with 8 points, while Bland and Kayla Brewton each contributed 7 points, with Brewton also pulling down 18 rebounds.
Toombs took the win over Woodville, 45-34.
Boys vs. Woodville
Wednesday’s rematch at home was a tough game with the Bulldogs falling in overtime to the Wolverines.
The Bulldogs came out with a 15-8 lead in the first quarter, and extended that to 27-18 by the end of the first half.
But in the second half, the TCHS offense went cold as they scored a total of just 13 points. At the end of the third quarter, the Wolverines had closed the lead to 33-30, and by the end of the fourth, the game was tied at 40-40. continued from page
Toombs struggled to move the ball as efficiently, registering just seven assists compared to the previous night’s 25. Woodville- Tompkins edged out the Bulldogs in overtime, winning 49-45.
Polke led the way with 16 points and Stanley added 11 in the loss.
Girls vs. Swainsboro
Hill continued her stellar play, racking up another double-double with 25 points and 16 rebounds. Miller, the Region leader in three-pointers made, added 11 points, knocking down three triples. Gardisser was a force on defense and chipped in 9 points, while Brewton added 8 points to round out the scoring.
It was a battle throughout with the game coming down to just one point. Toombs held on to take the win over the Lady Tigers, 55-54.
Boys vs. Swainsboro
Toombs was in control through most of the game, but had to hold off a late charge by the Tigers to take the win. Toombs pulled ahead in the first quarter and were on top, 18-6, at the buzzer. In the second quarter, the Tigers closed the lead to 30-22, but Toombs was still on top.
In the third, the Bulldogs extended their lead to 50-33, but in the fourth, the Tigers went on a run as they outscored Toombs, 24-12. Toombs did hold on and they took the win, 62-57.
Toombs was led by Fletcher with 16 points, with Polke and Bullard scoring 13 points each, and Stanley adding 9 in the win.
The Lady Bulldogs are 4-13 on the year, and they are 3-6 in Region play. The boys are 10-9 on the season, and they are 3-5 in Region play.
This is the final week of the regular season with each team having a slim chance to move into the #4 spot in the Region. On Monday of this week after presstime, the Bulldogs were at Savannah Christian for a Region matchup. They will be back in action in a nonregion game on Thursday at Montgomery County at 6:00 p.m., will host Tattnall County for a nonregion match on Friday at 6:00 p.m., and then will wrap up the week and the season on Saturday in a Region contest at Savannah Country Day at noon.
