Soperton, Treutlen County Opt Out of HB 581 Property Tax Relief

On Monday, February 10, 2025, the City of Soperton and Treutlen County Board of Commissioners held separate meetings to discuss HB 581, Property Tax Relief and Reform for Georgians. The bill would allow a statewide floating homestead exemption, an optional sales tax to offset property tax further, and reforms to the property tax process. Before local governments could opt out, they were required to hold three public hearings and pass a resolution.
After careful consideration, the City of Soperton and Treutlen County voted to opt out of the program. Soperton Mayor John Koon explained the reason for the city's decision: 'Opting into the program would take control away locally, and once you opted in, you can't change it. If Soperton and Treutlen County need tax reform, we can explore passing our own legislation.'
With this decision, both local governments have chosen to maintain control over tax policy decisions at the local level rather than participate in a statewide program that could limit future flexibility.
