Wheeler Third In Region
The Bulldogs basketball teams of Wheeler County High School took part in the Region Tournament last week. The Lady Bulldogs fell in their first game to end their season, while the boys took third place and will advance to the State Playoffs.
Girls vs. Treutlen
The Lady Bulldogs lost a nail-biter to Treutlen as they couldn’t hold off the Lady Vikings down the stretch, falling by just one point.
In the first quarter of the game, Wheeler jumped out to a big 15-5 lead over Treutlen. In the second quarter, Treutlen started to get their offense going, but the Lady Bulldogs took a 31-19 lead into halftime.
Wheeler continued to extend their lead in the third quarter as they looked to be in control of the game. Wheeler was up, 48-34, heading to the fourth quarter. But in the fourth, Treutlen went on a run as they stormed back into the game. Treutlen outscored the Lady Bulldogs 25-10 in the fourth quarter, and it was just enough to give them a 59-58 win over Wheeler.
Wheeler was led by Nikita James with 20 points, Elia Delgado added 13, and K’dence Mackey posted 8 in the loss.
The loss in the first round of the Region Tournament ended the Lady Bulldogs season. They finished with a record of 5-16.
Boys vs. Montgomery
The first quarter of this game was the difference for the Eagles of Montgomery. MCHS came out and took a 1912 lead over the Bulldogs of Wheeler in the first quarter. In the second, Wheeler closed the lead to two, but MCHS was still on top, 31-29 at the end of the first half.
In the third quarter, both teams slowed their pace as each scored just 10 points, but that gave the Eagles a 41-39 lead heading into the fourth quarter. In the final quarter of the game, The Eagles held on down the stretch to take the win, 62-60, over the Bulldogs.
The loss sent the Bulldogs into the consolation game to play for third place against Wilcox County.
Boys vs. Wilcox
The game was close in the first quarter as the Bulldogs were tied with the Patriots, 13-13, at the buzzer. In the second quarter, Wheeler began to pull away as they outscored Wilcox, 15-9. That put the Bulldogs on top, 28-22, heading into halftime.
In the third quarter, the two teams kept pace with Wheeler holding a 40-33 lead heading into the fourth quarter. In the fourth, Wheeler extended their lead, and they took the win over the Patriots, 51- 37.
That gave the Bulldogs the #3 seed coming out of the Region. Wheeler goes into the State Tournament with a record of 13-9. Wheeler will play this Wednesday against McIntosh County Academy on the road at 6:00 p.m. If Wheeler wins that game, they will play on Saturday against the winner of Trion vs. Taylor County.
