The Toombs County High School soccer teams faced off with East Laurens last week, winning both games on Thursday. Then the boys were in Savannah to take part in the Windsor Forest Invitational where they took on Southeast Bulloch in a game that came down to the wire. vs. E. Laurens
The Toombs County soccer teams played their home openers on Thursday night, and did so by sweeping East Laurens. The girls got off to a slow start, trailing 1-0 in the half, but got hot in the 2nd half, scoring 4 unanswered goals to capture the 4-1 win. Andrea Gutierrez, Emma Wright, Emerson Powell, and Josseline Zamorano each scored a goal in the 2nd half to propel the Lady Dawgs to the victory. The Lady Dawgs are now 2-1 on the season.
In the boys match, the Bulldogs jumped out to a 3-0 halftime lead, and added 4 more in the 2nd half for a strong 7-0 win. Angel Morales scored 2 goals, while Osvaldo Tinoco, Daniel Santoyo, Juan Luna, Omar Andres, and Kevin Luna each chipped in one. Goalkeeper Angel Nino has yet to concede a goal this season, recording yet another clean sheet. His defense was led by Jeffery Perez, turning in another strong performance to help secure the shutout win. The Bulldogs are now 3-0 on the season.
Coach Jeremy Moore said, “I am pleased with both results. The girls started out sluggish, and we have yet to play our best soccer. To their credit, trailing by 1 at halftime, they played hard in the 2nd half and got 4 scrappy goals. This was a big win against a very good East Laurens program. The boys continue to make improvements each match, and I’m excited about a 3rd shutout in as many matches. When you don’t concede goals, you give yourself a really good chance to win a lot of matches. Our 2 captains with down with injuries last Tuesday night at Jeff Davis. We had young kids step in and help get a win that night, and the same thing happened against East Laurens. Tucker and Miguel are still trying to get back from injuries, but our guys stepped in and played well.” vs. SEB
On Saturday, the Toombs County High School boys soccer team traveled to Savannah to compete against Southeast Bulloch in the Windsor Forest Invitational. The Bulldogs controlled possession for most of the match but struggled to find the back of the net.
With just under three minutes remaining, Osvaldo Tinoco broke through the SEB defense and slotted the ball past the goalkeeper to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. That lone goal proved to be enough, as the defense and goalkeeper Angel Nino held strong once again to secure another shutout victory.
Toombs County is now 4-0 on the season, with all four wins coming by way of shutout.
Coach Jeremy Moore stated, “Anytime you walk off the pitch without conceding a goal, you give yourself a chance to win. We’ve been fortunate to do that four times in four matches this season. We’ve also faced a few early injuries, including our two captains missing extended time, but our young guys have stepped up to the challenge. I’m thankful for the development these players have gotten over the past few years on JV, preparing them to contribute at the varsity level this season.”
This week TCHS was at home against Appling County on Tuesday after presstime. They will be back in action on Friday at home against Vidalia with games starting at 5:00 p.m.
