The Toombs County Sheriff’s Office alerted the public to a fugitive situation on February 18, as a wanted man was spotted in South Toombs County.

Christopher Owen Bryne, 42, has warrants out for his arrest for a suspected aggravated assault and false imprisonment. Law enforcement have been unable to capture Bryne since the warrant was issued, but most recently, Bryne was located at a woman’s home in the southern area of Toombs County.

According to the woman’s son-in-law, Bryne came onto her porch at around 11 a.m. on February 18, asking to charge his phone and promising to leave after. He told the woman that he had been staying at Dead River, off of the Altamaha River. The woman told Bryne that she would call her son-in-law to come see about what Bryne needed; the son-inlaw called 911 on his way to the home, but before he could arrive, Bryne was gone. Helicopters and law enforcement canvassed the surrounding wooded areas in search of Bryne, but were never able to locate the man. Toombs County Sheriff Jordan Kight warned the public of the man on the run, encouraging residents to lock their homes and any other shelters and to refrain from leaving any keys in motorized vehicles.

On February 19, Sheriff Kight shared that through a joint investigation with the Appling County Sheriff’s Department and Sheriff Mark Melton, the law enforcement officials believe that Bryne has left Toombs County and has fled to South Georgia.
