The intersection of State Route 135 and Old River Road was closed for a short period on Wednesday morning, February 12, after a 3-vehicle crash blocked the roadway.
At around 6:20 a.m., Michael Sharpe, 57, of Uvalda, was driving a 2006 Chevrolet Tahoe southbound on State Route 135 near the intersection while Kristian Boyer, 22, of Ailey, was driving a 2021 Toyota Camry behind him. Guilermo Pena Palacios, 32, of Chicago, was approaching the intersection from the opposite direction in a 2009 Volkswagen Jetta.
When Sharpe stopped at the intersection to wait to turn left onto Old River Road, Boyer was allegedly following too closely behind the vehicle, causing him to rear end Sharpe. Boyer then crossed the center line and hit Palacios’s vehicle in the front fender and door, before he spun counterclockwise and came to an uncontrolled rest facing north in the northbound lane of State Route 135.
After being hit, Palacios spun and stopped on the east shoulder of State Route 135 facing west, while Sharpe’s car went straight into the west ditch of State Route 135 and stopped facing south.
Although only Boyer was suspected of having serious injuries in the crash, all three drivers and one passenger who was traveling with Palacios were sent by ambulance to receive medical care from Memorial Health Meadows Hospital in Vidalia.
The Georgia State Patrol investigated the incident. Boyer was determined to be at fault for the wreck and received citations for following too closely and a seatbelt violation.
