The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has announced the closing of 5 Social Security Administration underutilized offices in Georgia, including the Vidalia office, located on 104 W. 3rd Street.
These closings –- the most in any state yet – come as a result of DOGE’s attempts to eliminate excessive spending by cancelling leases on vacant or underutilized buildings. As of February 26, DOGE reported that a total of 440 cancellations had occurred on leases for several gov- continued from page
ernment offices, including more than 40 Social Security Administration facilities across 20 states. The projected annual savings of these lease cancellations totals around $171 million.
DOGE reported that the annual cost of running the Vidalia office is $228,757. According to the Social Security Administration, in 2023, a total of 1,182 Toombs County residents and 296 Montgomery County residents received Social Security payments.
An exact date on the facility’s closure has not been announced.
