Soperton City Council Addresses Key Issues
The City of Soperton held its monthly council meeting on Tuesday, February 17, 2025, addressing key issues related to first responder benefits, infrastructure improvements, and an upcoming community event. A major agenda item was the approval of a resolution to provide PTSD coverage for first responders through Georgia Interlocal Risk Management (GIRMA). This decision ensures the city complies with the Ashley Wilson Act (House Bill 451), which mandates local governments to offer mental health benefits to emergency personnel. shifted to the city’s water system, focusing on the need for upgrades to meet Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards. Officials reviewed a list of necessary improvements, including updates to Well 1 and Well 2, the installation of generators, and other essential enhancements. Current estimates place the cost of these upgrades at nearly $1.7 million—excluding additional needs such as pipe replacements, sewage system improvements, and plant upgrades.
Mayor John Koon acknowledged the financial challenge, stating, “These items are coming and will need to be done,” while assuring residents that the city is actively seeking grant funding to offset expenses. “The last thing the council wants to do is increase property taxes,” he added.
The meeting ended on a positive note with a request from Paul Thigpen Automotive to rent Jean Gillis Memorial Park for a car sales event in April— the first of its kind in the city. The council unanimously approved the request, welcoming the opportunity for economic activity and community engagement.
