Montgomery County Resident Kash Waller got the chance to raise money for charity and show off his strength in Statesboro on Friday, February 28, as he arm-wrestled Georgia Southern University Quarterback J.C. French at the annual Stars for Trykes event.
Stars for Trykes is an event held each year by the Statesboro chapter of AMBUCS, which is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing adaptive bikes – known as “amtrykes” – to children and adults unable to ride traditional bicycles. These adaptive bicycles are given to individuals at no cost, as local AMBUCs chapters fundraise to cover the bikes’ cost, which is usually between $1,000$2,000.
13 year-old Kash Waller and his family first learned of the event when they were encouraged by therapists at the Therapy SPOT to get involved, as the business served as one of the event’s sponsors. Kash, who was born with tuberous sclerosis complex, previously received his own amtryke on March 23, 2023; thus, his family understood the importance of this fundraising event and immediately wanted to take part.
Stars for Trykes showcased the skills of individuals of all abilities through their talent show on Friday evening. The 12 participants were celebrated throughout the night, as they walked the red carpet and each received an award for their performances. Each participant also worked to raise money for the cause in hopes of taking home the People’s Choice Award.
Kash demonstrated his strength at the event, as he defeated Georgia Southern University Quarterback and Athlete in Action Buddy J.C. French in a match refereed by Kash’s sister, Braylie Davis. At the end of the show, he was presented with the “Unbreakable Award” for his strength.
Julie Waller commented that this award was perfect for Kash, as he always seemed to overcome the obstacles thrown at him. “His disease has caused so many setbacks, but he always comes back swinging. We wouldn’t change him for the world, but we would change the world for him!” she remarked.
The night was successful, as the organization brought in hundreds of dollars to help provide these bikes to the community, while celebrating the skills and abilities of individuals with special needs.
