Wheeler County Inmate Dead in Stabbing

An inmate died following an altercation with another inmate at Wheeler Correctional Facility Monday morning.

Wheeler County Coroner Kandice Purvis said the inmate, who was stabbed, was taken to Memorial Health Meadows Hospital and pronounced dead at 10:08 a.m. Monday. The inmate’s body will be taken to the Georgia Crime Lab for an autopsy.

While Wheeler Correctional Facility Warden Shawn Gillis verified that there was a homicide at the prison Monday morning, he said that the death is under investigation by state authorities and further information is not available at this time.
