Authorities Probe Death at Correctional Facility in Alamo

The investigation into the death of an inmate last week at Wheeler Correctional Facility (WCF) is underway.

A statement issued March 7 by CoreCivic, which owns the Alamobased medium security prison, reported that at approximately 8:45 a.m. on March 3 an injured offender was found by correctional facility staff inside his housing unit.

“Staff immediately called a medical emergency, and medical staff quickly responded, assessed, and called for EMS. Staff continued to provide medical care until EMS arrived and transported the offender to a nearby hospital for treatment,” CoreCivic reported. The offender was pronounced deceased after arrival at Memorial Health Meadows Hospital in Vidalia.

The name of the deceased inmate and further information about the incident have not yet been released by prison authorities.

The facility was placed on lockdown status immediately after the incident. CoreCivic, which partners with the Georgia Department of Corrections to operate the prison, said the investigation is continuing with full cooperation from WCF staff.

WCF, which has the capacity to house 2874 male inmates, opened in 1998 inside the Alamo city limits.
