The Brewton-Parker College Barons Cheer team competed at the SSAC Championships on March 7-8. The Barons competed against nine teams and saw their own Emma Banks win SSAC Flyer of the Year. The Barons finished with 70.09 points, finishing in eighth place.
The Barons team is very young and managed to improve their score in each and every competition of the season. The Barons also saw three members of the team win All-Conference honors; Charles Henkel, Harley Slade, and Emma Banks. Harley Slade was named the Champion of Character for the Barons this season, and Emma Banks made the SSAC All-Academic Team. Head Coach Keri Nester reflected on the team's journey this season, 'I'm extremely proud of how we have finished this season, considering sour of the eight athletes just joined the team eight weeks ago. Our goals this season were simple: 1) Don't be in last place, and 2) Continue to improve our score in hopes of breaking 70. In every competition, our score continued to improve. We were never in last place, and we broke 70 at the conference championship this past weekend. Our program is in year two of competition cheer, and our conference is extremely competitive and talented, so it's important for our goals to be realistic and achievable. It's important to recognize those achievements, that we had three athletes named to the All-Conference team, and that the SSAC Flyer of the Year also came from Brewton-Parker.'
The Barons' growth throughout the season is something they look to carry into the offseason as they continue to grow as a program. Things are looking up for the Barons, who hope their talented young team continues to grow and improve and can hopefully surprise opponents next season.
