True freshman Zahquel Davis wrestled well as he represented the Brewton-Parker College Barons at the NAIA Wrestling National Championships this past weekend in Wichita, Kansas. Day one began with a tough loss to the 7th seed and eventual All-American and National Semi-finalist Sawyer Hobbs from Providence via fall. Davis bounced back to finish the 1st session by winning his match over Joseph Teguia from Graceland via Decision 17-11.
Davis continued winning ways in the 2nd session of day one with a dominant victory via technical fall 16-1 over Bryce Milser from Oklahoma City. The win allowed Davis to advance to day two of the competition. Unfortunately, in the opening match of Day 2, Davis fell to All-American Temuujijn Menblieg from Dakota Wesleyan, thus ending the true Freshman’s Nationals campaign.
Davis Finished with 2-2 against the toughest competition the NAIA offers. Coach Smith said, “I am proud of Zahquel; his hard work showed right here at the end of the year, putting him in a position to make the podium. Although he fell short of that goal, we are excited for the process of putting in the work to get to where he wants to be next year,” The Barons wrestling program is excited to continue and hopefully bring back more athletes to nationals next season.
