Two local FFA members are headed to the state level after excelling in the Area Prepared Public Speaking Competition. Ayla Hardeman of Montgomery County Middle FFA and Kinsleigh Dixon of Toombs County Middle FFA placed first and second, respectively, securing their spots in the State Competition at the 97th State FFA Convention this April.

Hardeman claimed first place with her speech advocating for increased FDA regulation on safe and proper produce handling practices in the U.S. pecan industry. Dixon earned second place with her speech on the importance of saving wild horses.

“I have competed in the contest for three years because I enjoy speaking and want to get my message about agriculture out to more people,” said Dixon.

Students advanced from the sub-area competition earlier in March. For the Prepared Public Speaking contest, participants must develop and deliver a four- to six-minute speech on an agricultural issue of their choice. They are judged on both their manuscript and presentation skills. In addition, Toombs Middle FFA member Anna Lynn Hutcheson placed third in the FFA Creed Speaking Competition. Hutcheson recited the FFA Creed by E.M. Tiffany, and answered questions about its meaning and impact on her as an FFA member.

Local schools were well represented in these competitions, showcasing the dedication and talent of young agricultural leaders in the community.
