City officials and community members gathered at Vincent Faison Sr. Park, located on Ben Mitchell Avenue, on Thursday, March 13, to witness the official groundbreaking for the revitalization of the park.
On May 18, 2023, Governor Brian Kemp announced that the revitalization was one of 142 projects granted funding for the improvement of neighborhood assets like parks, recreation facilities, sidewalks, and healthy food access in communities all across the state disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Lyons was given $2.2 million to complete the project, and celebrated the accomplishment with a ceremony on June 6, 2023.
“Today is a historic day for us. I came on City Council back in 2004, and I know this has been an idea and a dream for us since all the way back then – when John Moore Sr. was Mayor and Ben Mitchell was Mayor Pro-Tem. I can remember them telling me about things they wanted to get done here, and ideas and visions we wanted to do. Well, it’s taken right at 20 years, but we are finally getting something done here. I am happy and thankful to know they’re looking down – John Moore Sr. and Lynn Mitchell – on what we are going to get accomplished here,” Mayor Willis Ne-Smith Jr. remarked.
The park was gifted to the community in 1972 and was formerly known as Hallmark Park before being renamed almost 15 years ago to honor longtime Lyons Recreation Department Volunteer Coach Vincent Faison Sr. Although the park was initially designed for softball and baseball games, later, it became a popular location for casual recreation because the park was walkable from the surrounding neighborhoods.
In 2018, the City received funds to construct a pavilion and playground, fulfilling the vision of the late Councilman Ben L. Mitchell. He stated before he died in 2019 that the neighboring community had to take ownership of the park so the park could reach its maximum potential. Since then, the park has hosted numerous events and programs, and the City Council has continued exploring ways to expand the park's usability to the community.
Most of the planned improvements for the park are focused on the increasing community involvement at the park. Lyons officials have developed a plan to create several multiuse fields. They also aim to build a second outdoor basketball court, pickleball courts, a community center, and a concession stand. In addition, portions of the previously underutilized park property will become more accessible and functional with additional parking areas and an improved stormwater conveyance system.
Mayor Willis NeSmith shared his enthusiasm for these updates, remarking, “Get a good look at improvements. We are going to have pickleball and basketball courts here available for our community for those being here. We hope this is one of many phases for our city and community.” He also emphasized the importance of these upgrades as part of a larger vision to create a vibrant and welcoming space for all residents to enjoy.
“It is an honor to be able to see the improvements to Faison Park,” City Councilwoman Cathy Benton added. “I hope that the community will be proud of it and enjoy it. I remember being in church and hearing Mr. Ben and others talk about improving the park. I know Mr. Ben and Mr. Vincent will be proud of the improvements to Faison Park.”
Vincent Faison Sr. Park is currently closed to the public to allow Sikes Brothers Construction to complete the project. Updates on the expected opening date of the park will be shared when available.
