CELEBRATING ST. PATRICK’S DAY – The Mt. Vernon Garden Club celebrated St. Patrick’s Day at their recent meeting on March 11. Their next meeting is slated for April 8.

On Tuesday, March 11, members of the Mt. Vernon Garden Club were met by leprechauns, shamrocks and everything green as they arrived for the March meeting. It was evident that we were celebrating St. Patrick's Day.

Hostesses for the meeting were Nita Moate, Jennifer Sikes and Terri O'Quinn. The floral centerpiece contained daffodils and jonquils, which are the birth flowers for the month of March. Daffodils and jonquils are noted for their bright yellow color representing Spring and new beginnings.

Following the buffet luncheon, guest speaker Kasey Jackson was introduced. Kasey spent 18 years as an agricultural educator and FFA advisor for the Laurens County School District. Since 2022, she has been the Toombs County Young Farmer Advisor where her role changed, allowing her to participate in more adult agricultural education roles.

The Young Farmers Program has about 150 members and they meet once a month. High on her agenda is promoting the young farmer of the year. She also noted that farmers do not age out of the program.

The garden club members were also interested to hear about worm composting. Kasey provided some very interesting information on using worm composting as a way of reducing trash and creating a rich soil to use in a garden. Club Member Susan Beard presented Kasey with the daffodil/jonquil centerpiece arrangement as a token of appreciation from the club. A business meeting followed with various committee reports.

The next meeting will be Tuesday, April 8.
