The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has charged Lyons Police Officer Dustin Matejcik, of Glenville, with violation of oath of office and felony theft by taking for an incident that occurred during a traffic stop.

On March 23, Matecjik assisted another Lyons police officer by translating conversation between the officer and the Hispanic male driver during a traffic stop. During the stop, Matecjik was asked by the driver to secure his property – money, a passport, and the vehicle’s keys – to give to driver’s wife, as the driver was being taken into custody.

On March 25, the Lyons Police Department was contacted by an individual asking about picking up those items, but the items were unable to be located. The Lyons Police Department contacted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to probe the situation. The investigation is still active, and Matejcik is currently charged with violation of oath of office and felony theft by taking.

Matecjik’s arrest is anticipated shortly. Once the investigation is complete, the case file will be given to the Middle Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

The city of Lyons issued an official statement on the matter, which read, “The City of Lyons applauds the Lyons Police Department for its quick action to address this issue and its dedication to maintaining a trustworthy department.”
