Vidalia Onions will be ready in time for the 48th Annual Vidalia Onion Festival, as Georgia Agriculture Commissioner Tyler Harper announced April 15 as the official onion pack date.

“I'm excited to announce, in coordination with the Vidalia Onion Committee, that April 15, 2025, is the official pack date for this year's Vidalia onion season,” remarked Harper. “Georgia’s worldfamous Vidalia onions are coming to a store near you very soon, and we are continued from page

thrilled that professional chefs, home cooks, and consumers across the globe will soon be enjoying the incredible, sweet flavor of our Georgia Grown Vidalia onions.”

Each year, the Vidalia Onion Advisory committee meets to discuss the official pack date, which determines when the onions may be packaged and shipped to markets everywhere. This date varies based on soil and weather conditions, but is normally set around mid-April, as the season normally runs from April until October.

“For the upcoming 2025 season, we have 10,000 acres of Vidalia onions planted in the production region,” said Vidalia Onion Committee Chairman Cliff Riner. “Our farmers are dedicated to sustaining this tradition, and it's evident that consumer demand for Vidalia onions remains strong. We look forward to another successful season defined by quality and flavor.”

Vidalia Onion Committee Executive Director Shane Curry further spoke on the crop, as he commented on the effects of the severe weather throughout the growing season on this year’s yield. “It was unexpected that our crop would endure a tropical storm, a hurricane, floods, and even six inches of snow-but that is exact ly what happened,” he emphasized. “Despite these unpredictable conditions, our crop has managed to withstand the challenges with only minor damage. We are eager to provide our consumers with the highquality Vidalia onions they look forward to each year.”

Vidalia Onions will be available for purchase at grocery stores and other retail spaces beginning April 15, and will soon be available for purchase throughout the city during the Vidalia Onion Festival, which is slated for April 24-27.
