Lyons Police Office Dustin Matejcik, 30, of Glenville, has been arrested by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and charged with one felony count of Violation of Oath of Office and one felony count of Theft by Taking.

On March 22, Matecjik assisted another Lyons police officer by translating conversation between the officer and the Hispanic male driver during a traffic stop. During the stop, Matecjik was asked by the driver to secure his property – money, a passport, and the vehicle’s keys – to give to the driver’s wife, as the driver was being taken into custody.

On March 25, the Lyons Police Department was contacted by an individual asking about picking up those items, but the items were unable to be located.

Lyons Police Chief Wesley Walker contacted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) for assistance investigating the incident on March 26. During the investigation, the GBI found that no one arrived at the scene to retrieve the items which Matejcik was instructed to give the suspect’s wife, and Matejcik never turned the money, passport, and keys into the evidence department.

Matejcik was arrested on Tuesday, April 1, and booked into the Toombs County Detention Center. He has been terminated from the Lyons Police Department.

Lyons Police Chief Wesley Walker commented on the incident, emphasizing that he planned to be as transparent as possible with the community throughout the case. “When we recognize that we have a bad apple in the department, then we want to address the issue and make sure that we maintain the integrity of law enforcement,” he remarked.
