The U.S. Marshals Fugitive Unit captured wanted fugitive Christopher Byrne on Friday, March 21, in Nassau County, Florida.
On February 16, the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation on a domestic violence incident, during which they issued warrants for Byrne’s arrest, charging him with aggravated assault and false imprisonment. As deputies were investigating the incident on scene – near U.S. Highway 1 and Georgia Highway 147 – Byrne fled from the crime on foot. He has attempted to evade law enforcement since February 18, when he was located at a woman’s home in the southern area of Toombs County.
According to the woman’s son-in-law, Byrne came onto her porch at around 11 a.m. on February 18, asking to charge his phone and promising to leave after. He told the woman that he had been staying at Dead River, off of the Altamaha River. The woman told Byrne that she would call her son-inlaw to come see about what Byrne needed; the son-inlaw called 911 on his way to the home, but before he could arrive, Byrne was gone. Helicopters and law enforcement canvassed the surrounding wooded areas in search of Byrne, but were never able to locate the man. Toombs County Sheriff Jordan Kight warned the public of the man on the run, encouraging residents to lock their homes and any other shelters and to refrain from leaving any keys in motorized vehicles.
He was spotted several times by the public, leading to numerous manhunts conducted by local and state law enforcement. After learning that Byrne had connections to Appling County, the Toombs County and Appling County Sheriff’s Offices joined forces, and searched several locations which they believed Byrne could have hidden.
After being unable to capture Byrne in Appling County, deputies believed that Byrne had traveled to South Georgia, and requested the help of the U.S. Marshall Fugitive Unit, who captured Byrne in Florida.
Byrne is currently being help on a $10,000 bond in the Toombs County Detention Center and has a felony probation warrant in Appling County.
