The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is paying tribute to the memory of Staff Sergeant Dustin Wright by naming one of their newest survey vessels, Wright.
The 30-foot boat is one of three vessels to join the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District and be named to honor fallen soldiers from Georgia. Wright – a Toombs County High School Class of 2007 graduate – was an U.S. Army Green Beret, who died in combat when ambushed in Niger, Africa, on October 4, 2017.
The ship will be used to survey the Savannah River and other waterways to help access channel conditions, monitor dredging activities and detect underwater obstacles.
The vessels were first purchased in 2023, but had to be equipped with the technology and specifications needed for operations. Upon completing their final inspection on April 8, the ships were adjusted one more time before being sent to their port.
The Wright arrived at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers District Office on the Savannah River on Thursday, April 17. The Army stated that they plan to share more information on the boats in the future, but look forward to utilizing the vessels daily and keeping alive the memory of three men who paid the ultimate sacrifice.
