ONION EATING CONTEST – The Onion Eating Contest is held at the Vidalia Onion Festival Arts & Crafts Festival every year.

At precisely 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, on the stage in back of the Arts and Crafts Festival, eager participants of all ages will take on the task of trying to eat the most onions in one sitting. With volunteers keeping count, competitors will leave with cash prizes. The contest is comprised of three divisions: ages 1–11, prizes are 1st$50, 2nd-$25, 3rd-$10, all other contestants receive $5; ages 12-17, prizes are 1st-$50, 2nd-$25, 3rd-$15; and ages 18 and over, prizes are 1st-$100, 2nd-$50, 3rd-$25.

The Lions Club will also be selling onions that are provided by L.G. Herndon Farms. The company also provides the onions for the Lions Club’s Onion- Eating Contest.

Visitors to the Arts and Crafts Festival can purchase onions in the following quantities: medium 10-pound bags, $10; medium 25-pound bags, $25; jumbo 10-pound bags, $10; jumbo 25lb bags, $25.

Net proceeds are used to provide scholarships to Vidalia High School seniors, donations to several charities in the area and to provide eye exams and glasses to needy families in the area.
