Lyons Girls Take Title
The 58th Annual Lyons Youth Tournament is underway, and the 14u girls' part of the tournament has wrapped up. And with that they had a local team take the title as the Lyons girls claimed the top spot over Hawkinsville.
The girls kicked things off with a win over Jenkins County. They took an early lead 2-0 after the first inning. They continued to add to that lead as they took the win 13-4 over Jenkins.
Up next was Swainsboro, and Lyons rolled to a run-rule victory. They took the win 17-0 over Swainsboro.
Up next was Hawkinsville in the semifinals of the winner's bracket. Lyons had no problems as they picked up the win. Lyons led the game 9-0 after the first inning and were on top 10-0 after the second. They went on to win the game 13-0 over Hawkinsville.
That moved them into the Championship Game. Hawkinsville came back through the losers' bracket for a rematch in the final game. This time things were closer. The game was scoreless over the first two innings, but in the third the Lyons girls seemed to break it open as they scored six runs.
Hawkinsville came back with two in the top of the fourth inning and then two more in the fifth, but Lyons held them off to get the win, 6-4, and take home the title.
This group of girls have already won two State Championships, but this was the first time that they had won the Lyons Youth Tournament. They will now move on to the GRPA State Tournament in Augusta in a couple of weeks.
