Eagles Lose First Game
It was a tough Friday night at Wilcox County for the Eagles of Montgomery County High School as they suffered their first loss of the season.
The Eagles did put the first points on the board with around three minutes to go in the first quarter. After the defense forced a punt from Wilcox, MCHS moved the ball down the field. They were down to the 1-yard line, but were facing a fourth and goal. The Eagles went for it and punched it in for the touchdown. They added the extra point to hold a 7-0 lead over the Patriots.
Wilcox took the ensuing kickoff and began moving the ball down the field. At the end of the first quarter they were at the MCHS 25yard line. Wilcox ended up kicking a field goal early in the second quarter of the game to close the lead to 7-3. The Eagles did get the ball across midfield on their next possession, but they turned the ball over on downs at the Wilcox 47-yard line. The Patriots quickly moved the ball inside the red zone and capped off the drive with a touchdown pass. They tacked on the two-point conversion to take an 11-7 lead over the Eagles.
The Eagles again turned the ball over on downs on their next drive, this time at the Wilcox 39-yard line with four minutes to go in the first half.
The Patriots again went right down the field and scored with two minutes left in the half on a touchdown pass. They missed the PAT but led 17-7 over MCHS. MCHS again got across midfield but stalled as the first half was coming to an end.
The Eagles added a touchdown early in the second half of the game on a pass play. They missed the extra point but had closed the Patriot lead to 17-13.
From there it was a defensive showdown between these two teams. The Eagles came up with a couple of stops, including an interception inside the 10-yard line, but never could get the offense going against the Patriots.
Wilcox held on to take the win, 17-13. That gives the Eagles a 4-1 record on the season. This week they will be off before heading to Johnson County on October 8.
