Toombs Drops 2 Games
The Toombs County High School softball team finished up their regular season last week with games against rival Vidalia, and then against Tattnall County. The Lady Bulldogs had already wrapped up the #4 spot out of Region 2AA, and with that will be playing in the State Playoffs this week.
Vs. Vidalia
Toombs kept it close against the #1 ranked team in the state as they gave up just three runs in the game. They had several runners on base during the game, but just couldn’t come up with the big hits when they needed them. The Indians picked up a run in the bottom of the first inning to take the early lead, but the Toombs defense and pitching did a good job of keeping them held over the next two innings.
In the bottom of the fourth inning VHS added two runs to take a 3-0 lead over the Bulldogs.
In the top of the fifth inning TCHS got their lead off runner on, and it was the fourth time in five innings that Toombs had put the leadoff batter on base. They just couldn’t get the hits to move them around and put runs on the board. Riley Lumley was the runner for TCHS and they advanced her to third, but a groundout ended the threat by Toombs.
Arlie Gooden had a hit in the top of the sixth inning, and in the seventh inning TCHS had a hit batter and Lumley again got a hit for the Bulldogs, and they had just one out. But a strikeout and a fly out gave the win to the Indians, 3-0.
Vs. Tattnall
It was the final game of the regular season for Toombs as they took on AAA Tattnall County at home on Thursday. Tatnall picked up a run in the top of the first inning, one in the second, and one in the third to take a 3-0 lead over the Bulldogs. Brinley Miller did reach second base in the second inning, and Nora Grace Mercer had a double in the third inning, but Toombs could not get a run across. In the top of the fourth inning Tattnall loaded the bases with no outs, and that led to several runs for Tattnall. They plated several runs in the inning as they took a 6-0 lead over Toombs.
Toombs did manage to get two late runs against Tattnall, but the Warriors added three more in the game to win, 9-2, over Toombs.
On Tuesday of this week the Bulldogs started a best-of-three series against Oglethorpe County. Oglethorpe is the #1 seed out of Region 4AA. Toombs went into those games with a record of 15-12 and they were 6-9 in the Region, while Oglethorpe was 18-5 on the year and were 11-0 in their Region.
If there is a game three of the series, that will be played on Wednesday at Oglethorpe in Lexington, GA.
