MCHS Eagles Win Over Rival Wheeler Bulldogs

The Montgomery County High School Eagles hosted the rival Bulldogs of Wheeler County High School on Friday night in Mt. Vernon. It was close through the first half of the game, but the Eagles pulled away in the second half to get the win. Wheeler had the ball to start the game and put together a long drive. Jacques Kincy and James Culver had several good runs as they ate up yardage and clock. Kincy had it at the 15 with just over five minutes left in the first quarter. Culver pushed it to the three before he went in for the touchdown with 2:26 left in the first quarter as they took nearly 10 minutes off the clock. Wheeler went for a twopoint conversion but did not get it, but they led 6-0.

Wheeler went for an onside kick, but the Eagles jumped on it at their 48yard line. Several penalties against the Eagles moved them all the way back to their own 25-yard line, but a pass from Bo Davidson to Brandon Denmark got 28 yards back, and then a pass to Ahmad Carter gave MCHS a first down at the Wheeler 34-yard line. Cam Wallace got it to the 14-yard line on a good run, and then Samari Madison got the call and set up the Eagles at the 2-yard line. On the next play Denmark was in for the touchdown with 10:26 left in the second quarter. The extra point was good from Jackson Cartwright for a 7-6 lead.

Brandon Smallwood had a good return on the ensuing kickoff, and then a big run by Kincy had Wheeler across midfield to the MCHS 45-yard line. Kincy and Culver again combined to set up the Bulldogs at the 25-yard line with another first down.

A pitch from Kincy to Jay Faison put the Bulldogs at the 14-yard line with just under five minutes to go in the half. Culver ran to the 2-yard line, and then he went in for the touchdown on the next play. Wheeler added the two-point conversion with Culver taking it in to put them back on top, 14-7 with 2:50 on the clock.

The Eagles took over at their own 31-yard line. A facemask penalty on Wheeler put MCHS at the 49 of Wheeler, and then a pass from Davidson to Xavier Brantley put MCHS at the 37-yard line. Wallace had two runs and a penalty on Wheeler had MCHS at the 7-yard line of the Bulldogs. Denmark had it at the 2-yard line for a first down, and then with just 16 seconds to go in the first half, MCHS was into the end zone again on a Denmark run. Cartwright added the PAT to tie the game at 1414 heading to halftime.

In the third quarter the Eagles started with the ball and scored quickly as Wallace broke free for a 71-yard touchdown run to give the Eagles their first lead of the game. They added the extra point to lead 21-14 over Wheeler. Later in the third after another big run from Wallace, the Eagles were in for another score as they pushed their lead to 28-14 with Davidson scoring on a short run to cap off the drive. Wheeler was back on the board early in the fourth quarter as they closed the lead to 28-22 with the addition of the two-point conversion after a 25-yard touchdown pass by Kincy.

The Eagles extended their lead when Davidson found Brantley for a 30-yard touchdown reception. Cartwright added the extra point for a 35-22 lead. Wallace then had another long touchdown run, this one for 76 yards as MCHS was on top 42-22. MCHS scored one more time with Darius Wells taking it in from eight yards out as the Eagles led 49-22.

Wheeler added one more score late, but the Eagles took the win, 49-28.

This week the Eagles will be at Dublin with this Region game having playoff seating implications. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. The Bulldogs wrapped up their season with the loss to MCHS. Wheeler finished the year with a record of 5-5 and they were 3-5 in Region play.
